Pangong Lake

Changing color of Pangong

Pangong Lake, the most beautiful lake in northern India, is situated at the height of 14,200 feet. This lake has salty water because there is no drainage passage of water and in spite of that, it freezes in the winter. Because of the salty water there is no life in this lake except some micro vegetation. There is no breed of fish or aquatic life but there are small crustaceans.

But there are some permanent herbs which can be seen grown near the lake. This lake is a place for many migratory birds that came here and breeds. This is the main breeding grounds for many birds.

This lake is 5 to 6 kms wide at its widest point and 130 kms long. This lake lies in the border of India and china, in which 60% is in china and 40%, is in India. This lake is opened few years ago for the tourist and it still is under the army control. But due to bulky layer of soil the size of the lake is shrinking on a large scale.

To reach Pangong, a person can take a route from Thiksey village. This lake lies besides the Chushul Mountain. This place is so beautiful that one can sit and enjoy the place without doing anything for hours. This is the lake which changes it color in every single hour. There is one Khurnak fort which is also a tourist spot, which lies at the northern bank of the lake. But this fort is seized by the Chinese border.
